What to Expect for your Portraiture shoot?

May 29, 2025

This is not a photoshoot in the traditional sense. It’s not about looking TikTok fake.  But it is about look the best you.  It’s about being present. About arriving just as you are — with your stories, your scars, your strength — and creating something meaningful from it.

My Emotive Fine Art Portraiture sessions are designed for artists, survivors, seekers.  You may be marking a transition, commemorating a milestone, or you may just be needing a quiet space to see yourself.

Whatever brought you here, know this: we will take our time. We will create something real together.

Here’s what the experience looks like — from first contact to final portrait.

Before the Shoot: A Conversation, Not a Questionnaire

When you reach out, we’ll have a conversation.

Before we ever pick up the camera, we’ll schedule a reflective consultation, either in person or via video call. This is where we talk. Not just logistics — but intention. Why this portrait matters to you. What you’re feeling. What you want to see, or show, or release.

We’ll create a moodboard together, selecting tones, textures, and references that speak to you. Not to mimic — but to orient ourselves emotionally.

There’s no pressure to perform. This part is just about listening.

Arrival: Stepping into the Space

On the day of the shoot, we meet in a space that feels quiet and co

ntained. That could be at my studio, a location we’ve chosen together, or even your own home.

We generally have hair and make up, unless you have your own preference.

You settle in. You breathe. You don’t need to “get ready.”

The Session: Two Hours, No Rush

Over the course of two unhurried hours, we’ll photograph in short bursts. We might change outfits. We might shift the lighting.

We will start with what I call the “LinkedIn look” first.  This will be more of a nice looking, professional photo that you can use for your resume, CV, or LinkedIn profile.  Clean, bright, competent, and confident.  It will be professional, but it won’t be generic.  You’ll have the best corporate photo in your company.  Guaranteed to get that promotion!

A variant of this is the Actor’s Headshot.  There’s a specific look to it.  It should be unadorned so that the casting director can see your face, but also show enough that they can envision you inhabiting characters.  You can then use it for your onesheet.  Not to brag, but major roles have been booked, in part, thanks to our headshot!

After the Session: Selection and Editing

During the shoot we will periodically be looking at the photos to get an idea of where we are at.  Then by the end of the session, we will have a rough selection of several dozens.

After the shoot is when the work starts behind the scenes.  I’ll narrow it down to a handful (really you only need two great ones!) and hand-edit each image with care and subtle retouching.  No Tik Tok filters, I’ll remove flyaway hairs, etc.  Basically it is still you, ie, if it is something that won’t be there next week (like sudden pimples), I’ll remove it.

Within two weeks, you’ll receive a private gallery of up to 5 final portraits as well as a few other unretouched “outtakes”.

The final portraits will be in hi-res as well as smaller social media ready size.

If you’d like, I can help you select one to be framed or mounted as a physical piece.
